I worked on this proect with Russell Strauss, a longtime member of the National Federation of State Poetry Societies and the Tennessee Poets Society. Strauss had been a poet for many years but had never published a book of poetry. That's where I came in, creating a cover design and a layout. I also performed the duties of an editor, putting the poems in order, and giving the book a title.
I created the layout and cover designs in Adobe InDesign. I used this software to create parent pages for the running title and the page numbers in the footer and to generate a table of contents. I used an online source to generate a UPC barcode for the back cover.
I centered the longest line of the poem and used a guide line to determine where to place the poem on the x-axis. For the y-axis placement, I centered the shorter poem in relation to its neighbor, nesting it. My desire was for the poems to be both readable and to look good on the pages.
